Information Design

May 4th, 2012 by prathiba.j · 2 Comments

Hello,

I would like to share basic definition of Information Design

Information design is the detailed planning of specific information that is to be provided to a particular audience to meet specific objectives. The information designer may or may not have available (or may create) an information architecture that defines the overall pattern or structure that is imposed on the information design and an information plan that defines information units and how they are to be completed. The output of an information design is sometimes expressed in written instructions, plans, sketches, drawings, or formal specifications.

TWB Alumni Meet

May 2nd, 2012 by Trainingteam · No Comments

The TWB Alumni Meet held last weekend was well received and attended. Thank you every one.

Some sent an e-mail indicating their inability to attend the same :( (. Some came and have given positive suggestions to take this forward. We will be calling for a meeting soon to get into action. Arun Prabhu sent us this photograph-for obvious reasons he is not in the photo (since he was the photographer :) ).

Some of the feedback received are:

TWB will always be special for me and I will always find time for it. Just like Technical Writing TWB is close to my heart.

Kahkashan K, FCP 18

Happy to be at a place that made my career. TWB Rocks

Bishnu Prasad Panda, Fundamental 82

Usability Test

May 2nd, 2012 by devika.r · 2 Comments

Usability Testing is used to evaluate any product or system. When a product or a service is truly usable, one must be able to use it in a manner one wants to use it without any hesitation or second thoughts. If a system is easy to use but does not satisfy the needs of the target audience then it will not be used even if it is given away for free!

Key difference between usability testing and traditional testing is that the former takes place with actual users of a product. The latter is undertaken by a developer, designer or a project manager.

Types of usability testing are:

Exploratory testing: This is conducted when a product is in the nascent stage.

Comparative usability test: This is conducted before a product is released. Users are made to test the features of the product. Their conveniences and inconveniences are listed and catered. This helps in bridging the market gap.

Assessment test: This is conducted either early or mid-way in the product development cycle. Rather than just seeing how well a user can perform realistic tasks, this test helps in recognizing specific deficiencies in the product.

Validation Test: This test take place much closer to the release of a product. It is intended to measure usability of a product against established bench marks.

Comparison Test: This test can be used in conjunction with any of the above tests. This test is used to understand which design is easier to use or learn and to understand the advantages or disadvantages of different designs.

Some of the advantages of usability test are:

  • User’s behaviour can be gathered in detail
  • This test relies on what actual users do rather than just saying what they do.

Some of the disadvantages of usability testing are:

  • They can be costly in terms of facilities and equipment.
  • This test can be conducted only with a small sample of potential users.
