Indexing
May 14th, 2012 by shalini.g · 2 Comments
An index is a list of keywords which helps to search an information in the document.
It can include a list of names, persons, places or subjects.
It guides or points out the references in the text of a document.
It is usually given in the back matter of documentation.
For index entries an alphabetical listing should be preferred as it makes a topic easy to find out.
To create an index it is important to choose the words or phrases that best represent the topic key terms.
In index entries use chapter or section titles if they include related key terms.
The keywords in the title of tables or illustrations can be used for index entries.
Keyword selection also depends on the purpose of the document.
The first word of main entry should be capitalized.
Sub-entries or sub-sub-entries should not be capitalized except if they are normally capitalized in document.
For example – Environment (Main entry)
aquatic
terrestrial (sub-entries)
